Long Ruan : Thesis on Disaster Relief Design
The occurrence of a natural disaster disrupts the lives of living organisms and human beings and leaves them with nothing but surviving souls to look upon. The restoration of human life after a natural disaster demands more than the basic needs of food, water and shelter. The metaphysical needs of human social interaction and bonding are also essential for recovery. Architecture should address the needs of social interaction, connection and reconstruction of community needs which are often overlooked following the event of a natural disaster. But as nature can destroy, it can create as well, for nature itself display many examples of living architecture. Cells of living organisms are the building blocks of life. Each cell contains chromosomes that contain DNA, which make up the genetic characteristics of living organisms. Architecture can exceed the basic human need by examining and understanding the processes of cell division and structural properties of chromosomes.
